Fed: Taskforce making a difference in building industry - MBA

CANBERRA, April 30 AAP - Master Builders Australia (MBA) said today the Interim BuildingIndustry Taskforce had made a difference in the construction industry in its first sixmonths of operation.

The taskforce was set up last year during the Cole Royal Commission into the constructionindustry with powers to investigate site industrial issues and to recommend prosecutionsto the authorities.

"The taskforce has done a good job in an industry plagued by industrial relations problems,"

MBA chief executive Wilhelm Harnisch said in a statement.

"We understand the taskforce has received approximately 450 complaints and undertakenover 300 site visits since its work began on October 1 last year.

"With 29 active investigations and three matters before the courts, the work of thetaskforce is making a difference."

Mr Harnisch said effective enforcement of the rule of law will be the major underpinningto any future reforms for the building and construction industry.

"Even with limited powers, the taskforce is already making a difference, causing thosewho operate from a basis of intimidation and standover tactics to realise that this sortof behaviour won't go unpunished," he said.

Mr Harnisch said the MBA looked forward to a federal Budget announcement that wouldsecure funding for the continuation of the work begun by the interim taskforce but wherestronger powers and a more disciplined workplace relations environment would acceleratethe reform process.
