Fed: Management the key to protecting reefs - report
A report says Australia's reefs are in better health than most coral reefs around the world.
CLIVE WILKINSON, author of the Report on the Status of the World's Coral Reefs, saysthere's good reason to be optimistic about the future of Australian reefs.
He says the strategies of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and West Australianauthorities have improved their survival prospects.
Dr WILKINSON -- the co-ordinator of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network -- saysmaintaining water quality, protecting fish stocks and developing sanctuaries have givenAustralian reefs a better chance of recovering from coral bleaching.
He says 60 per cent of the Great Barrier Reef showed significant bleaching early thisyear but it's recovered enough for scientists to report only six per cent of coral hasactually died.
